I'm a hypocrite.
Being at the Natural History Museum made it clear to me.
I'm a hypocrite.
How can I claim to be an Environmentalist when I'm a meat eater.
Okay, so humans are omnivorous and historically we used to hunt our game and grow it.
But you know what, I'm a grrl who has lived her entire life in the western world and has consumed (with great privilege and pleasure) all the west had to offer her.
I eat beef, I like hamburgers (real kind, I've not stepped into a Burger King in three years and a McDonald's in five years), I like kebab, shawarma, pargiyot, shrimp, salmon, lobster and tuna.
Yet I make sure all my face cleaning soaps, moisturizers and such are not tested on animals.
I'm a hypocrite.
I've often considered becoming a vegetarian, but it never seemed worth it because I love meat.
But in the past year my ideology (of which I had none during high school and most of my army service) is quickly solidifying, and in the past I used to think ideological vegetarians were cheating themselves.
I'm becoming aware that I'm actually cheating myself.
How can I be an advocate of animal rights, when I use them in such a disgusting way?
God the hypocrisy!

Date: 2006-04-26 10:53 am (UTC)The only "bad things" in meat are antibiotics and the likes, which some farmers give their living stock. Some - you can definitely find meat and other animal produce without them.
Fatty acids, which meat has, aren't bad. If you're eat a large steak each day, maybe. Not with a more moderate consumption.
All the fat-soluble vitamins are digested much, much better when from an animal nutritional source, rather than vegy. Also some of the water-soluble ones, like B12. You do know that all veggies should do a blood screen every three months to make sure your B12 levels aren't too low, right?
And, iron, which is an issue for women. Do you know how much seasame and the likes you need to eat in order to substitute for a regular consumption of meat?
In short, meat is only unhealthy if consumed in excess, or if the source is bad. And if you have the same amout of the same nutrient in meat, and in a veggie dish, the digestive system would absorb more from the meat source - and if it's another mammal, and not just another animal, it's the best absorbance. That's just the way it is.
