V: Ah, I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced. I do not have a name. You can call me V. Madam Justice...this is V. V... this is Madam Justice. hello, Madam Justice.
Justice: Good evening, V.
V: There. Now we know each other. Actually, I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you're thinking...
Justice: The poor boy has a crush on me...an adolescent fatuation.
V: I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn't like that at all. I've long admired you...albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child. I'd say to my father, "Who is that lady?" And he'd say "That's Madam Justice." And I'd say "Isn't she pretty."
V: Please don't think it was merely physical. I know you're not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.
Justice: What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!
V: I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!
V: Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn't it? You thought I didn't know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything! Frankly, I wasn't surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.
Justice: Uniform? Why I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one...
V: Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!
V: Well? Cat got your tongue? I though as much.
V: Very well. So you stand revealed at last. you are no longer my justice. You are his justice now. You have bedded another.
Justice: Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?
V: Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did! She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel. I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know. So good bye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman I once loved.
*KABOOM!*

Date: 2007-02-02 01:48 am (UTC)I've been open about my liberal politics since I was about 15 or so and about my atheism since about age sixteen or seventeen. I hid my bisexuality for a bit longer since it was something I wasn't entirely certain about myself but came out at almost 22 and was thrown out of home for that and a few other things. That's actually what led to my living in Oregon and my ultimately being able to meet you when I lost my job there.
And since I probably won't do this in my own journal but want to reciprocate:
1) I'm the one that initially friended you but honestly can't remember the specific circumstances although I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was due to some lenghty dissertation. Or, just as likely, because you had a shiny icon. :p
2) a. Not Ready to Make Nice - Dixie Chicks
    b. I'd Start a Revolution - Aimee Allen
    c. Rockin' in the Free World - K's Choice and Indigo Girls
Movie: V for Vendetta, obviously.
3) I am as amused by your passion as you are by my laissez faire attitude. It's just so cute and makes me want to hug you.
4) I remember months before we even thought we might meet, I called you and left you a voicemail but told you that if you answered, I'd hang up 'cause I'd be too nervous to talk to you. Also, the day after we met, you called to see if I might stay a day longer to hang out with you some more and I was having so much difficulty understanding you that I had
5) A dolphin.
6) Do you have any concrete plans for your future?

Date: 2007-02-02 07:40 am (UTC)Well, I was in Kenya twice.. first in 2005 for a field school, where I travelled around with some professors and a bunch of spoiled rich kids. It was a somewhat frustrating experience (since it was with the university so we always had to be 'safe' and were somewhat sheltered), but it allowed me to make connections that I'd never be able to make otherwise (like meeting my now-boyfriend), and it was a real eye-opener in a lot of ways.
In 2006 I applied for an internship with an indigenous rights organization, Indigenous Information Network. I went back to Kenya in the summer to work for them, and it was pretty much the best experience I could have asked for. The organization was working to empower people who were marginalized first by colonizal forces and then by the independent government. They often had limited access to education, health care and had many issues with land and cultural rights (similar to some of the struggles that indigenous peoples face here in Canada). I was able to do a lot of close work with grassroots organizations and experience really rural, traditional lifestyles. I did a lot of writing for the organization's magazine, wrote a lot of funding proposals and did a lot of community work, and did work with bigwigs like the UN and Oxfam. Plus I hooked up with my boy and had a hell of a good time in the city.
