Weekend at NYC (part 1)

my weekend, it was tons of fun! It's so enjoyable meeting people you've only spoken to on-line.
Friday
I spent the majority of the day with Jade and Libby, and at half past two I caught the train to Center City and was just in time for the 15:30 bus to NYC.
Got to Chinatown caught the subway and in about 45(?) minutes I got to the Upper West Side, met
krazyhippie (Rachel) outside the gates and we walked back to her dormitory where a comfy Airbed awaited me.
We didn't actually do much that evening, but her roommates helped us figure out where to eat supper - we went to Greenwich Village (which looks like a suburb in the middle of the city) and on Hudson St. we went to a southern themed restaurant called "Cowgirl", for some reason the manikins outside were dressed girl scouts *bemused shrug*.
We then rode back to the Upper West Side, got back to the dorms and proceeded to have strawberry and chocolate fondue and just talked about nothing until four o'clock in the morning.
Saturday
It was freezing in the dorms, I didn't sleep that well, but since when I do sleep I'm pretty much dead I got enough rest and was up and about at 09:30 showered and ready to go.
Then I woke Rachel up.
She got ready and we figured out a schedule in accordance to the Subway stations, it was fun, almost like a puzzle.
Our first stop was the Unfinished Cathedral of St. John the Divine which is just ten blocks away from Colombia University. It was huge and had a certain elegance to it, however I couldn't help compare it to the French and Italian Cathedrals I had visited and I felt it was trying too hard to be something it wasn't. But unlike the European ones it had corners dedicated to all sorts of causes and organizations that obviously donated a hell of a lot to the Cathedral. Very American. We got crappy coffee at Starbucks *sigh* I really do not like it, but it was a good kick start for the rest of the day, so I didn't mind that much. We caught the transit bus through Central Park just like last week with
orcabee and I felt proud of myself that I recognized the area, yay.
We arrived at the Met, and just began walking around, first to the Greek and Roman art, which fascinated me to no end, the most amazing thing to me were the stamps carved in different kinds of stone and gem. The details were absolutely amazing and Rachel and I discussed what it must have been like to be a chilling out and just making all that beautiful art work, that was probably the most common thing back then and hoe priceless it is over 3000 years later.
We also walked around the medieval art, which as usual was a bit boring since I feel it's a bit "seen it once, seen it all", it reminded me of the Philadelphia Art Museum. It was when we saw an poster for a special exhibit about Hatsepsut (whom I admire quite a bit), that I remembered there was a regular (spectacular!! With a re-created egyptian temple!) egyptian exhibit. So we went back to the lobby and there I saw (I'm excited just writing this) Sam Waterston!!! Yes, Exec. Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy was in the same room as me and if I hadn't been so effing star struck I would have gone up to him and politely informed him of my adoration of him. But alas he escaped and I probably won't ever see him again *sob*.
I'm going to take a break now.
Next post, there shall be more NYC
