So that happened.
TW: In the body of the post there is writing about the rape that was mentioned and discussed in the episode.
I'm not gonna lie. I'm still riding the high from last week's episode.
I don't think it, its implications and the history it recounts have left me the whole week - why yes I do have other things happening in my life, what do you think I use as an escapist retreat?!
So this episode was kind of, well, it had its great moments.
Let's put it this way - the fact that a powerful high classed man, with powerful friends in his Old Boys club, didn't get away with murder of a working class girl and the rape of her sister went a long way to make me feel really good about the underlying morality of this here my favourite show.
So there's that.
Being spoiled, I knew this was Lori's goodbye ep. I'm glad they didn't make a big deal out of it, seeing as by now, she'd already been pretty much written into the margins of the show and was not receiving as much screen time as she did earlier in the season. Seeing as her character was clumsily written, and a scene hog to boot, I can't help but say good riddance.
On a more meta note, I feel bad for Lauren German, that she got so much flack for what was essentially a casting mistake, because those guys have more affect that people realise. Not to mention that Lori was passed around the male population of the show (except Chin, happily monogamous and never-single, Chin) like a... well, you get the picture.
Had she been a good actress and an interesting character I would have cared beyond the principle of the thing - but really, Lauren German was there to be blonde, blue eyed eye-candy. Her presence exacerbated the white-supremacist doctrine of the show to a degree that sometimes made me want to read into the screen and shove the camera around so that we could see the fact that most of the white people on Hawaii are freakin' tourists!
*ahem* I may, uh, feel strongly about this.
Not to mention the fact that she brought in gender essential language - not just her own dialogue, but also the way her character operated within the paradigm of the show - which made me eye-twitch every time, because before her presence there was no judgement as to what kind or type of man or woman we saw on the show. Femininity was not derided and placed in opposition to masculinity and the different styles of masculinity were not judged as better or worse.
Yeah, I didn't like Lori, or her character.
Still, I have no doubt we'll be seeing her again by the season's end. I'll be very pleasantly surprised if we don't.
The one good thing about her presence? The show had Bechdel passes and wins! I mean, how cool is that. With just Kono, a Bechdel never crossed my mind, so I didn't judge the show with that criterion in mind - but the fact that they did have two women and they spoke to each other and it wasn't about a guy? Kudos show. Kudos.
And another kudos! The show uncompromising sex-positive attitude towards men and women! Catherine and Steve continue their friends with benefits relationship, it's lovely to watch and the fact that the show has made no overt claims that what they have is a romance makes me giddy inside!
The fact that there was no judgement of the woman (Vicky, the murder victim) that she went looking for a date on Valentine's day (poor Danny, lonely again!) and there was no judgement of her sister Amanda for being a rape survivor and choosing not to go to the police (and keeping the baby conceived by the criminal who assaulted her) - which, you know doesn't even happen in Law and Order: SVU!
Onto the my favourite topic: Danny!
Poor lonely Danny. He looks for a present for Gabby, even though he doesn't have a date for Valentine's day. He wore a tie! He kept on his tuxedo tie during the investigation! He knows Russian!
Personally, I think he knows more Russian than he said he does, other wise why was he put on a case in Brighton Beach - very likely a co-operation between the NYPD and Newark PD - the because Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, New York is also known as, wait for it, "Little Odessa". Whereas the Brighton Beach in New Jersey is, well... a tourist resort. Not saying there couldn't be a Russian mob there, but um, let's just go with what's logical, yes?
Danny, your Russian Jewish roots are showing! I say this as a Jewish girl with Litvak roots!
Hearts in my eyes. Seriously. <3_<3
Also, it's really not fair that Steve looks so good when he's banged up. Because seriously, man, can you be more beautiful and suffering? Saint Sebastian has nothing on you! It never even occurred to me that Steve would be the one code-blueing. I mean, the fact that they've made Steve the punching bag of the show is one thing, but to incapacitate him even more?! Makes no sense.
Kono and Chin continue to be badass and hopefully now that Lori is gone, they can get the screen time and character development they deserve! Also, Max, who is right there in the credits but who I have seen so little of - Pancakes are a great way to hook up, pay no attention to Danny's face, he's kill to have a date with at a pancake diner!
Anything else?
