Buffy rocks.
Period.
"Twilight" can go suck on a stale bag of O Neg and perish quickly into the aether never to return.
Please.
Now-ish!

This is of course, memed everywhere.

This the text that accompanies this brilliant remix at the blip.tv link:
In this remixed narrative, Edward Cullen from the Twilight Series meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer at Sunnydale High. It's an example of transformative storytelling serving as a visual critique of Edward's character and generally creepy behavior. Seen through Buffy's eyes some of the more patriarchal gender roles and sexist Hollywood tropes embedded in the Twilight saga are exposed in hilarious ways. --- This transformative work constitutes a fair-use of any copyrighted material as provided for in section 107 of the US copyright law. I hate Twilight with a passion... well, I would if I bothered to acknowledge it's cultural significance... which is pretty minuscule (if at all) compared to the cultural monolith that is Buffy.

Buffy is <3 forever!

Monolithic? I love Buffy as much as you, but it's a cult program while Twilight is a mainstream juggernaut.

The way television is written and produced was revolutionised by Buffy.
The way a show is structured, interactions between characters, etc.
Most popular teevee wouldn't be what it is without Buffy.
Buffy isn't cult - the following may appear cultist, but it's huge. It's just been a while.

The cultural significance of Twilight is the same as any other mainstream juggernaut - money. If it makes an actual impact on people (I cannot tell you how many people I know who view Buffy as a life changing text) then there's something to talk about.

You are giving Buffy way too much credit. It's a great show, is extremely well-written, and has inspired hundreds of academics, but saying it revolutionized storytelling and character dynamics just isn't true. Neither serialization nor strong characterization was a new concept, and stating that most popular TV -- which, so far as I know, is dominated by American Idol, episodic sitcoms, and episodic procedurals like CSI, NCIS, and Law & Order -- wouldn't be what it is right now just wrong.

As to Twilight, you admit you're not a fan, and outright dismiss it, so how can you say for certain who it's touched, and what its significance will be in a decade hence. I'm not saying it's going to outlast Buffy, or is artistically superior, but waving it away right now sounds like nothing more than a Trekkie saying Lucas is a hack, and Star Wars will never mean anything.

Heroes, Smallville, Supernatural etc, would never have attained the kind of popularity they got were it not for Buffy and X-Files.
I don't know what you're talking about.

I'm dismissing Twilight because it is just bad. I'm an HP fan, and if it weren't for Harry Potter, Twilight wouldn't have been as successful - as far as I'm aware everyone there is High School age - Harry Potter itself, are badly written books, the only thing worthwhile there is fandom, very likely the only thing worthwhile in Twilight is fandom.

I think Buffy, as a show, is more than just the fandom.

The episodic procedurals, as a type, have been around for decades. The kind of storytelling told in Buffy was not the type you'd find in young adult television - not to mention that its a transgenerational show - people from the age of 12 onwards can watch Buffy, understand and enjoy - which is something that occurs so much in television now we're barely aware of it, but before Buffy that sort of thing was very, very rare.

And now, I'm going to sleep!

Twilight is criminal IMHO, it teaches an entire generation of young girls to be pathetic and that stalking and abusive relationships is romantic.

I hate it with the fire of a million suns.

V and Justice

V: Ah, I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced. I do not have a name. You can call me V. Madam Justice...this is V. V... this is Madam Justice. hello, Madam Justice.

Justice: Good evening, V.

V: There. Now we know each other. Actually, I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you're thinking...

Justice: The poor boy has a crush on me...an adolescent fatuation.

V: I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn't like that at all. I've long admired you...albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child. I'd say to my father, "Who is that lady?" And he'd say "That's Madam Justice." And I'd say "Isn't she pretty."

V: Please don't think it was merely physical. I know you're not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.

Justice: What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!

V: I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!

V: Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn't it? You thought I didn't know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything! Frankly, I wasn't surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.

Justice: Uniform? Why I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one...

V: Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!

V: Well? Cat got your tongue? I though as much.

V: Very well. So you stand revealed at last. you are no longer my justice. You are his justice now. You have bedded another.

Justice: Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?

V: Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did! She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel. I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know. So good bye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman I once loved.

*KABOOM!*
