I had planned to post this last night, but alas, things happened and in reality, I doubt my thought on *yayz* new Canon are that interesting.
Well, you'll get to read it anyway, if you want to be spoiled that is!
I live blogged the ep as I watched it.
Hope you enjoy my impressions as I went by!
Spoilers! You have been warned!
Yay contemporary London!
It's a Holy Grail robbery!
By a white woman protagonist pretending to be Indiana Jones.
Squeee, white Converse Trainers... teehee.
Happy Easter indeed! The silliness, how clever it is.
Credit role along with the funky theme... Oh, how I missed it! And Him!
Car chases are always good.
Random black lady on the bus hearing voices... not so good.
The bus has been transported to another world? By the voices? Hmmmm... I'm thinking the Holy Grail was a Red Herring.
Oy, nu! A desert planet? For real? Ever since "Dune" I swear... And clicky talking aliens.
They're surrounded... by the dead says the random lady... that means this has happened before.
Hey three suns! Like in Pitch Black, great movie that.
Awesome, Sonic made sun glasses!
"Midnight" reference.
There is never "just sand", the desert is generally full of things (including people) there are probably alien snakes, alien beetles alien rodents, oh and those clicky talking aliens that are probably the reason that random black lady can hear, but no one else.
Creepy so far.
Worm Hole! Not a door in space!
Fatality #1 Old Bus Driver - turned into a skeleton by deciding to walk through the Worm Hole. Didn't see that one coming, nope, not at all, no siree, total surprise.
UNIT? Really?
Faraday Cage... aren't they all clever.
Christina (Indiana Jones girl)... she's kind of obnoxious, I like that, but I suspect it'll bite her on the ass later on.
Brain Box... he he...
Carmen (Random black lady) is gooood.
Something is always coming... and why do they always shine?
Death? As in DEATH?
It's the simple things that make everything worth while aren't they?
The Doctor doesn't have any of those things.
Huh.
Where is the TARDIS?!
Red caps ahoy. UNIT are not as pleasant as they once were. I think they're a bit traumatised from the finale of the 4th season. I haven't caught any other ep references.
That DI is a bit obsessed with the Cat Bugler, no?
Christina's bag is bigger on the inside. Where is the TARDIS?!?! I'm getting a bit worried here.
*snort* Bored little Rich Girl, okay, I get it. Yes, we get she's clever and speshul.
I also want Universal Roaming.
LOL! Automated answering phone! Oh, Doctor how I feel for you. Something tells that UNIT is going to be less than helpful this time around, though.
Welsh Geeks?
Very cute babble mouth Welsh Geeks :)
Megalomaniacal Technobabble, he he...
Clicky talking aliens are insectoids!
From Beneath They Devour... sorry, couldn't resist.
The Flies (Lord of the Flies anyone?) are in the same mess as the Humans, I'd say.
Other worlds are indeed quite fantastic.
She probably will kiss him, though.
Dead worlds are not quite so fantastic. Feeling sad now.
It really is the small things that will fuck you up.
Oh, they are shiny those Sting Ray things. Sting Ray Locusts.
The technobabble is, at times, painful.
They're gonna have to start running very soon.
Tee hee, super spacey way. Oh, Doctor. *sighs happily*
Very elegant Swan Dive, for sure.
Donna, *sniff*. More ep references.
I like that they referenced the economic crisis.
Clever Christina! Big red buttons FTW!
The non-Humans never survive... *sigh*
Finally, they're running!
Guns never solve anything... especially against a Worm Hole and a swarm of metal sting ray locusts.
Well at least the Holy Grail came in handy!
Has she met him? Careful!
But he doesn't have the TARDIS! You can't just close it! I knew UNIT weren't so cool, *grrr*.
Hover-Bus... nice, very nice.
'Kay, not such a psychic moment.
So very Peter Pan.
He drives everything as though it were a TARDIS!
Kiss, of course. There's always a kiss.
What is with the clapping in these Specials?!
Everybody loves him!
Yay, TARDIS! In Buckingham Palace? The Queen wouldn't mind, you say...
Doctor! Stop being so Emo... even though we love you for it.
Seriously, the Doctor's angst is something to behold. And he's rejecting a young blue eyed beauty.
Oh, well. He never leaves with Companions on the Specials.
He's so totally rescuing her, though.
Carmen is saying Cthulu will knock four times! Also, soon he'll be regenerating! *weeps*
He totally rescued her! :D
She stole the flying bus! Brilliant!
And that was it.
All's well that ends well. The Doctor is back in the TARDIS and off to a new adventure that will be airing sometime in November, I think.
All in all not a bad episode. I was expecting something a bit more on the Horror Genre, with a name like Planet of the Dead, I was expecting something like the Library episodes in Season 4, or the Ood episodes in Season 2.
I enjoyed the episode, so much more than "The Next Doctor" which absolutely sucked! My (spoilery) thoughts on that ep to be found here, but it wasn't really the standard of "A Christmas Invasion", "The Runaway Bride" (Donna FT Fucking W!!!!!) and "Voyage of the Damned" (Kylie!!!!).
A few Meta thoughts on this ep not included in my Mystery Theatre 3000 above: Don't blame me for being spoiled!.
I'm not really sure why Carmen needed to be psychic.
The Doctor tasted the dead in the sand in any event. Was it to add the creep factor, which was kind of lacking. It's hard for things to be creepy when everything is being shot in a wide angle, in broad day light, in a huge landscape.
And the information she gave him at the end... kind of redundant, imo. Why does the Doctor need to know his "song" is coming to an end and why would the expectation of "someone knocking" be more meaningful if he knows in advance than if he were surprised by it.
Russell T. Davies is really good when it comes to foreshadowing, but this was a little ham-handed.
I really liked that everyone was regular and mundane (even Carmen).
Christina was speshul, but I didn't actually think she's be continuing on with us to the next Special episode so I wasn't bothered by it.
She's a very self-entitled person, which is pet peeve of mine, it was all Poor Little Rich Girl who compensates by being a cat bugler and pretending to be Indiana Jones.
She's probably never considered a meal to be special.
In any event, a fun ep to watch. Not much canon gained, though I suspect Doctor/Christina fics will be popping up. I'll personally be scoping Carmen and Lou fics. I love supporting character fics.
It would appear that the next adventure "The Waters of Mars" is to be a bit more Horror, what with an impersonal foe and such. Those are always creepy.
In relation to this fandom post; I want a Dreamwidth account. I'll probably attain one once the Beta version is up, but having an invite would be awesome! If not because someone out there likes me, but because my Birthday is in a month.

Date: 2009-04-15 10:29 am (UTC)And yeah, if there is one character who I think deserves a chance to get back into the Moff Who, it is Captain jack. Lord knows I don't want to see Rose or Martha or Donna again. But Jack... he could return.

Date: 2009-04-15 10:32 am (UTC)Rose is closed (finally!), Martha is closed, gosh a normal life working for UNIT :).
I'd be really interested to see more Who/Torchwood crossovers that include more interaction with the other characters and not just Jack and the Doctor, but those my own wantings.
Jack, Jack, Jack, how you have changed super-heroism and the role of the Leading Man... *sighs happily*.

Date: 2009-04-15 10:40 am (UTC)And I was very surprised they called in UNIT and not Torchwood to deal with that rift. But I guess UNIT were much *much* cheaper on the budget. I suspect John Barrowman maybe demands a pretty high fee these days.

I want 'em spoilers!!!! Pretty please.

Date: 2009-04-15 10:48 am (UTC)Actually I wonder if ljcut tags work in comments...
Donna and Wilf and Donna's mum have all been spotted on set filming for new Who, which will be the two-part Christmas episode. (As have Sarah Jane and her wee boy.)
But also, as alluded to by Random Psychic Woman in PotD, John Simms has also been spotted. So the shape of the Doctors final adventure has sort of taken shape.

Re: Spoilery Speculation Comment
Date: 2009-04-15 10:59 am (UTC)Mind you part of my brain is still convinced that lady in red who escorted the Master on the airship was Romana. Even though when they badly fluffed the finale to that season, that was one of the interesting possibilities that got destroyed. Along with almost everything else interesting they could have done when we got The Doctor Is Jesus instead. Meh. I hated that finale.
Re: Spoilery Speculation Comment
Date: 2009-04-15 11:09 am (UTC)Lucy as Romana, ya think?
I dunno, I really like the arc leading up to that finale and it wasn't Doctor as Jesus, is was Doctor Care Bear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Care_Bears_Movie_II:_A_New_Generation#Synopsis).
Re: Spoilery Speculation Comment
Date: 2009-04-15 11:39 am (UTC)And yeah, I thought Lucy was going to turn out to be Romana in thrall to the master, of course that was also when I thought the Toklafen were going to be wind up being the Time Lords returned as the corrupted toys/children of The Master. (Which I still think would have worked better than the story we got.)
