"The head of the criminal affairs bureau in Lower Austria, Franz Polzer, said Mr Fritzl had admitted sexually abusing his daughter repeatedly during the time he imprisoned her".

May I please ask; why is no one calling what this disgusting excuse for a human being did, rape?
Why is it sexual abuse, when it happens between family members?
Why are "incest" and "molestation" used instead of calling it what it is?
Is there any doubt that this so-called father forced his daughter into becoming a sex-slave and having seven children of his children?

That... man... should be castrated, thrown into a jail cell (solitary confinement at that) for the rest his natural life and never see the light of day again.
Of course, that kind of justice isn't what's given out to sex offenders these days.

If I weren't so angered by this, my mind would be boggled.

To me, rape is included in the terms "sexual abuse", "incest" and "molestation". Those terms/words imply force and non-consent - thus, rape. What these people were enslaved to is horrifying - but I don't see why you're so up in arms about the use of wording when it's obvious that rape was involved.

It's ironically amusing, though - the choice of the articles' wording doesn't bother me the way it does you, but I'd opt for shooting the bastard in the face several dozen times over castration and imprisonment in a heartbeat. Unless the castration was to be done haphazardly and he was left to suffer until death. Some people just ain't worth the cost of the bullet.

Wow, I'm sadistic.

I need to edit the entry about the enraged bit, seeing as I'm far more angry that this sort of thing happens a whole lot more than how it's reported.

Your sadism in this instant is warranted.

I've always rather liked the idea of these creatures going to jail. Because for sure the general prison populations know how to deal with them.

I think it rather fitting in their last days they get a taste of what they have inflicted on others.

I think I would appreciate their imprisonment more if it wasn't my tax dollars going towards keeping them in their little lockboxes - especially when GP retaliation isn't always a guarantee. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth knowing that while I can barely afford my heating bill and groceries, scum like this gets 3 squares and climate control daily with part of my money. I believe that if someone commits a heinous crime and there is no doubt surrounding this as fact, just ctrl-alt-del them and let them restart. Whether one believes in heaven & hell, or reincarnation, or that you just end when you're dead - punishment/accounting for your actions will be forthcoming. Eradicate the abomination, or just speed them on their way to retribution - but not on our turf! :)

Ugh, I know I'm weird. And uncompassionate. Need more coffee.

I don't fundementally disagree with you.

However, the absolute clincher in my mind when it comes to any more... permanent solution to these offenders, is the fact that the police can and do regularly stitch up innocent people for crimes they did not commit. And when I think of the number of people that would have been wrongly executed in the UK if we had a death sentance, I find myself utterly oppossed to it on these practical grounds at all.

I do however think prison cells are a little too cushy. The recent claims made by UK prisoners against the government using the human rights act are utterly absurd, and should never have been allowed. They're in prison! They don't have a basic human right to satellite tv!

I agree, to a point - there are lots of cases where instant-death is not appropriate. I'm speaking to the instances where there is no doubt whatsoever, however rare those might be. I appreciate the practical side of this quandary - but I'm human and not always known for my practicality, but more for my idealism ;)

Yes, there are certain high profile cases where it can do some good. The symbolic hangings of some of the high ranking nazis for example, were important.

Nah, I'd simply put him in a cell with the biggest baddest prisoner around. And then tell said prisoner that he's got an "open season" on his new cell mate, and exactly what said cell mate did. He'd be dead within the week, and probably suffer more.

What REALLY blows my mind is that the guy's wife didn't notice the woman and kids in their basement for the last two decades? Hello, anyone home?

Seems to me that this guy must have abused his wife as well, until denial sunk in.
There are some things that people can't deal with and so they erase it from their minds.

Incest can go on for years and pass through generations... really disturbing.

As someone whose family has actually followed that unfortunate pattern, I totally agree with you. It still blows my mind though!

Dude...

And yeah, that kind of denial... not easy to comprehend... none of it is really.

I wonder why Gaiman never made an eighth endless called Denial... would get along excellently with Delirium methinks.

I agree with you about the way the "R word" is avoided in these cases, also often in cases involving minors.

the whole thing is horrifying.

Also, regarding some of the above posts...folks who've never done time (say, more than a week or two) who claim prison cells are too cushy, ought to spend a month or so in one and then see.

It really angers me when the media words it like that, it's as if it's a lesser offense to rape someone in the family than out of...
To me it's a perpetuation of the "dark alley" myth, but that's just my impression of the wording.

It's prison - it's supposed to be un-cushy. If someone lands themselves in prison for a significant length of time (and yes, I know lots of people end up penned up who don't deserve it) they should be glad of what they get and not a worse alternative.

But like I said, I'm an uncompassionate jerk ;)

well, it's just that, you know, even if they have satellite tv it's not cushy.

I also hear folks talk about being sent to prison AS punishment, not FOR punishment. anyway, it's a button issue for me which is why i said anything.

V and Justice

V: Ah, I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced. I do not have a name. You can call me V. Madam Justice...this is V. V... this is Madam Justice. hello, Madam Justice.

Justice: Good evening, V.

V: There. Now we know each other. Actually, I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you're thinking...

Justice: The poor boy has a crush on me...an adolescent fatuation.

V: I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn't like that at all. I've long admired you...albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child. I'd say to my father, "Who is that lady?" And he'd say "That's Madam Justice." And I'd say "Isn't she pretty."

V: Please don't think it was merely physical. I know you're not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.

Justice: What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!

V: I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!

V: Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn't it? You thought I didn't know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything! Frankly, I wasn't surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.

Justice: Uniform? Why I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one...

V: Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!

V: Well? Cat got your tongue? I though as much.

V: Very well. So you stand revealed at last. you are no longer my justice. You are his justice now. You have bedded another.

Justice: Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?

V: Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did! She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel. I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know. So good bye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman I once loved.

*KABOOM!*
