Today was Stop Violence Against Women Day and there was a Take Back the Night march in Tel Aviv this evening.
I'm very happy I participated in it (my first one), I carried a sign, blew a whistle and had a very nice supper with [livejournal.com profile] morin who was the ride there and back.

There were unfortunately not that many people, most of the various Women's Groups showed their presence and of course חד"ש (the Israeli Communist Party) were there, but then again you can't go to any Left political assembly without them being there to show their support. I'm not particularly fond of חד"ש because while I obviously agree with their Left ideas and ideals, I can't whole heartedly agree with the Party because I'm not a Marxist, [livejournal.com profile] morin then told me about the "Marxist Paradox" - how it wasn't the Proletarian that brought about the Marxist ideas, but the plump and satisfied Bourgeoisie that saw that "Thing weren't Right". Add to that that I'm very much in favour of personal ambition and self-actualization and thus Marxism doesn't really work.
However, seeing as Capitalism is currently being used to perpetrate slavery and create products that last the life time of a fruit fly, I can't really go all Ford on their Marxian asses (not to mention that Ford was an anti-Semite and Marx was Jewish, if mainly lapsed). I hate political economics.
I'm very much in favour of Anarchy... Where's Emma when you need her?

The March couldn't have come at a better time or worse, depending how you look at it, since just this week, notorious serial rapist (he raped countless women in the Tel Aviv/Centre area) Benny Selah escaped from custody the day he was supposed to be transported for a court appearance. It's very worrying, on many levels, one is the fact that we now have, once again, this violent monster on the streets. Second, is that it takes a serial rapist to get the police to take action against violent crimes against women. And third, that the action is going to be telling women not to walk alone in the street, not to leave their homes ar certain hours of the night and yada, yada, yada.
Never mind that statistics show that 80% of all rapes and other sexual assaults are done by people we know, most often by a family member. Never mind that there is still a dark shadow of silence and shame towards the victims of rape and sexual assault and that people still say that victim had something to do with the assault, ya know, if she was dressed provocatively, or walked in an ally, or had a long plait that enabled the rapist to pull her to the floor.
Any of that shit. Never mind, it hasn't to me. I'm lucky.
No, it's not luck... it's just happened to somebody else.

Break the Silence and stop the Shame!

I heard a cute comment about communism and capitalism the other day:

Capitalism is when one man benefits at the expense of another. Communism it's the same thing the other way around.

V and Justice

V: Ah, I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced. I do not have a name. You can call me V. Madam Justice...this is V. V... this is Madam Justice. hello, Madam Justice.

Justice: Good evening, V.

V: There. Now we know each other. Actually, I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you're thinking...

Justice: The poor boy has a crush on me...an adolescent fatuation.

V: I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn't like that at all. I've long admired you...albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child. I'd say to my father, "Who is that lady?" And he'd say "That's Madam Justice." And I'd say "Isn't she pretty."

V: Please don't think it was merely physical. I know you're not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.

Justice: What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!

V: I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!

V: Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn't it? You thought I didn't know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything! Frankly, I wasn't surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.

Justice: Uniform? Why I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one...

V: Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!

V: Well? Cat got your tongue? I though as much.

V: Very well. So you stand revealed at last. you are no longer my justice. You are his justice now. You have bedded another.

Justice: Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?

V: Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did! She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel. I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know. So good bye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman I once loved.

*KABOOM!*
