I'm veering off real life politics for a little, in order to draw your attention to the latest issue of Project Rooftop, which is all about the redesigning of Wonder Woman's Outfit.

Personally, I think Diana's outfit as it is now (shorts/briefs, boustiere breast plate, boots and bracelets), totally kicks ass. Despite the fact that it is probably one of the most revealing (Star Sapphire got that one), with the force of her personality she manages to pull it off and make it work.

It is in fact the force of her personality that makes her work as one of the Big Three, I think.

Diana hasn't been written well in the past twenty years, I think. Cut for length )

Some Harry Potter fanart.

It's just too funny.

These are are posters promoting the "Persepolis" movie which is based on Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis, which is a work of art!
I can't wait to see the movie!

Spot the Difference )

Who effing needs artistic integrity in a cartoon, after all, it's a movie for kids, about kids and family values are all kids need to know about... in America.

Well, give me punk-ass, depressive-smoking, outraged-girl-child Europe anytime. I hope, really hope, we decide to go with a European version of a poster (if and) when the film heads to this little sand-mound in the Middle East. Knowing how things go here, it may very well not come here since Iran - see Ahmadinejad - wants to kill us and so the art of a progressive Iranian woman may be... you know... dangerous. Right. /snark now.
I'm not saying it will happen for sure, it just wouldn't surprise me if it did.

She has a DeviantArt Account, which I discovered via Blognewsarama.

And she draws things like this: under a cut due to largeness )

And this: it's so effing cute! )

And who're my cute nihilistic heroes of an alternate Golden Age? That's right! Little Nite Owl, Rorshach and Dr. Manhattan!

Aren't they the cutest, you can see more DC legacy cards and other comics and fandoms.

She also has an LJ - here and an actual website, not just a DeviantArt user.

Batman at his best.

this is probably one of the best things I've ever seen on [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily.

I laughed out loud.
Yes, I actually lol'd!
For along time.

Then again, it's most likely because I can really relate to Batman in this one.

Please, go read it and have a great day!

Whoa!

Subscribing to [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily means that on any given day I will be seeing comic books scans taken out of context and apparently out of whack!
Now I don't click on every cut [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily puts up, since ya know, how much time can I actually spend on looking at crack!-ified images.
But I like the Maximov kids, I think their Dad messed them up big time... but not as much as the artists did.

Before I begin my nitpicking, I'd just like to say that I think sexy is good, and both Polaris and Scarlet Witch were always sexy characters, but seriously what are the artists trying to do here?
And now, my nitpicking )

That entire post was disturbing to me, the images were jarring, specifically the third one, and that is not how I view Wanda and Lorana Maximov.

Yeah, yeah I know this is what [livejournal.com profile] scans_daily does, I mean the whole point of that comm is to bring the crack! and slash! and "out of context" stuff.
There's a difference between good, clean (and dirty) fun and that.
Just MHO.

Then again, I could just be over sensitive.

Because my righteous rage has been, for the past few months, been a little too much and since I enjoy having people enjoy my writing I was trying to cool off on the whole "I'm angry and this is why..." posts.
It was working.
Until I saw these:
Cut for hugely objectifying images of a comic book character who should NOT be objectified in this manner! )

Now I've read the many... very many... livejournal entries, blog posts, newsletter issues and more, about this for sale image of Mary-Jane of Marvel Comics.
I wasn't sure I had anything to add.
Other than the fact that I'm, uh, outraged?!
That this, this! is how the Big Wigs (which includes Joe Quesada the Editor in Chief) at Marvel decides to approve the portrayal as one of the best known non-superhero/heroine characters of the Marvel Universe.

This is, by the way, just the latest incident in which they deform a female character in order to titillate the "target audience" into buying these God awful statues.
They did it to Emma Frost )

And if you thing Marvel are the only ones... well, shall we see what the DC Big Wigs (Dan Didio and Paul Luvitz, are who I'm thinking about) do to their Heroines. Or more to the point, allow to be done and approve it for sale!
My own personal heroine, Catwoman )
Supergirl... lucky she's wearing a cape... otherwise she'd be showing cleavage on both ends )

This, my readers, is such bullshit!
It is in fact, as the icon says: "...bullshit, guano and horseshit all dumped together in wasteland".
And no, I don't think the outrage is "too much", it should spread like wildfire, the Internet must be awash with girls, women, boys and men, furious at the literal objectification of female characters to nothing more than cheescakery, T&A images made, to promote the company and not the actual characters who all happen to be women.
I'm not being over sensitive, I'm being totally serious.

It's all fine and dandy that the heroines wear skimpy outfits and are at times (most of the time) posed and sexualized, I don't like it, but it's better than it used to be and I do believe the Big Wigs are listening to a certain extent and are trying to see that their "target audience" are not just teenage boys, who really don't need to be encourages to view women as sexual objects.
They do it just fine with the rest of popular culture showing them that this is the fact.

However, since Mary-Jane is not a heroine. She is in fact the spouse of Peter Parker, one of the most if not The Most Popular Hero in Comics, Spiderman. And as such she obviously does his washing and cleaning and presents herself to him as the "little woman" she is.

Yes, that was sarcastic.

My two favourite artists were bisexual, feminist, controversial women. Huh.
And despite being very different in culture, politics and art, there are more similarities than differences between them.

I mean they both pushed the envelope of their respective arts at the time, both had extra-marital affairs with women (they remained married to their husbands until the end of their lives, though Frida divorced Diego Rivera once, but they remarried). They both had extremely turbulent, hard lives, dealing with many health (mental and physical) issues, until they both died at a young age.
Both at the end of their lives, seemed happy to leave this world on their own terms (Woolf committed suicide, Kahlo gave in to her bodies demands).

Death and metamorphoses is apparent in their work and both very conscious of the fact that they were not as society wanted them to be.

It's easy to see why I love them.

V and Justice

V: Ah, I was forgetting that we are not properly introduced. I do not have a name. You can call me V. Madam Justice...this is V. V... this is Madam Justice. hello, Madam Justice.

Justice: Good evening, V.

V: There. Now we know each other. Actually, I've been a fan of yours for quite some time. Oh, I know what you're thinking...

Justice: The poor boy has a crush on me...an adolescent fatuation.

V: I beg your pardon, Madam. It isn't like that at all. I've long admired you...albeit only from a distance. I used to stare at you from the streets below when I was a child. I'd say to my father, "Who is that lady?" And he'd say "That's Madam Justice." And I'd say "Isn't she pretty."

V: Please don't think it was merely physical. I know you're not that sort of girl. No, I loved you as a person. As an ideal.

Justice: What? V! For shame! You have betrayed me for some harlot, some vain and pouting hussy with painted lips and a knowing smile!

V: I, Madam? I beg to differ! It was your infidelity that drove me to her arms!

V: Ah-ha! That surprised you, didn't it? You thought I didn't know about your little fling. But I do. I know everything! Frankly, I wasn't surprised when I found out. You always did have an eye for a man in uniform.

Justice: Uniform? Why I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. It was always you, V. You were the only one...

V: Liar! Slut! Whore! Deny that you let him have his way with you, him with his armbands and jackboots!

V: Well? Cat got your tongue? I though as much.

V: Very well. So you stand revealed at last. you are no longer my justice. You are his justice now. You have bedded another.

Justice: Sob! Choke! Wh-who is she, V? What is her name?

V: Her name is Anarchy. And she has taught me more as a mistress than you ever did! She has taught me that justice is meaningless without freedom. She is honest. She makes no promises and breaks none. Unlike you, Jezebel. I used to wonder why you could never look me in the eye. Now I know. So good bye, dear lady. I would be saddened by our parting even now, save that you are no longer the woman I once loved.

*KABOOM!*
