A few days ago I posted this:
Pick a character I've written and I will explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.
I got some requests :) All of which are detailed under their respective cuts. If you want more, don't hesitate to ask!
Magneto a.k.a. Erik Lehnsherr
*I must caveat that the majority of my knowledge of Magneto and the world of the X-Men in general comes from the original 90's cartoon and the live action movies, so purists might be disappointed in this.
1) Erik doesn't do long term planning. He has a hard time thinking ahead, he isn't aware of this, but it's what he does. He can't see, not really, beyond his next meal. This is an residual thing.
2) Erik hates sympathy and craves empathy.
3) Erik struggles to reconcile his attachment to his Judaism and being a Mutant. Judaism is human and frail, his Mutation is supposed to make him beyond his humanity.
4) Erik believes in tough love, but he doesn't see how much his children just need him to hug him. He doesn't see how much he just needs his children to hugs him.
5) Erik desperately wants Charles to see what he sees when it comes to mankind and join him in keeping their people alive and stop pandering to humanity.
Steve McGarrett of "Hawaii Five-0"
1) Steve is a patriot. He has a great love for his country and he loves serving her, yes "her", in the best way he can.
2) Steve isn't a perfectionist, but he likes things done his way, because let's be honest, they're the best way, and often, they are the best way to do things. The ethics aren't murky, they just aren't other people's.
3) Steve was raised by horrible, terrible people. He doesn't know this. And if he does, he's sure they had their reasons, and he's in denial.
4) Steve is stupidly in love with Danny Williams. The things he loves about Danny are considerable and a lot of it has to do with the fact that he is everything he never knew he wanted or needed.
5) Steve's doesn't know how to be happy. He tries and he sometimes manages moments of joy, but he doesn't know how to hold on to it. He doesn't know that happiness are those moments.
Grace Williams of "Hawaii Five-0"
1) Grace is 10 years old.
2) Grace lets Danno baby her up to a point. Because she's 10.
3) Grace barely remembers when Mommy and Danno weren't fighting. There are some memories of happy times, but most of those are gone and she's glad she doesn't have to hide in her room with head under the pillow anymore.
4) Grace is a princess. She doesn't want a prince.
5) Grace loves Uncle Steve, he's taught her how to use a knife properly. Danno only ever taught her gun safety.
Danny Williams of "Hawaii Five-0"
1) Danny is a non-practising Catholic-Jew (Cashew) East Coaster of Italian, Irish and Eastern European extract. He's very proud of his heritage.
2) Danny is always angry. He's angry when he's sad, when he's happy, he's always angry. It's a great motivator.
3) Danny is a self aware bisexual man. He hates that word. But he knows that's what he is, even though he's partial to breasts.
4) Danny will kill without second thought for the people he loves. He will lay down his life for the people he loves. He is stupidly in love with Steve, who likes him just the way he is, which is good, because Danny doesn't like himself all that much sometimes..
5) Danny is emotional in a way that makes other uncomfortable. He doesn't give a flying fuck, because he's a crass motherfucker.
Kono Kalakaua of "Hawaii Five-0"
1) Kono has been training in Martial Arts since she could walk. She still wants to be a ninja.
2) Kono feels free when she is on a board, when she steps back on dry land it's like she wakes up from a dream and real life is harsh. She doesn't remember getting injured, only washing up to shore her whole body in agony.
3) Kono didn't speak to her parents, or anyone else in her family, except Chin, when he was kicked out of the force. She still resents them for making him a pariah.
4) Kono keeps a diary of her kills; names, dates, and methods. She wonders if that makes her a psychopath.
5) Kono gets tunnel vision when it comes to the people she loves, she focuses on them and the big picture can get a bit blurry at times.
I had a very hard time picking out only five things for each character, as they each contain multitudes, and I have so much more to say about each of them.
