I loved it!
The procedural plot, amazingly, was solid. The twists gave me whiplash every so often, but I didn't think it was mind numbingly boring like a lot of the other plots that we've seen throughout the second season, so that is a major plus. It helps that the writer of this episode, Stephanie Sengupta, has a solid background in "Law and Order" so, you know, procedure is her thing :)
It also didn't go where my brain wanted it to go. I mean, before we knew that the money the victim stole was for blackmail, I had imagined that the girl stole it in order to either have an abortion or help her friend get an abortion, but I kept thinking that there is no way a show like Hawaii Five-0 would touch that subject with a ten foot pole.
Skeevy sex tapes though, that's fair game. Still, there was a whole lot of judgement for the teacher who was having an affair with a 17 year old girl. Legal or not, it's fucking disgusting for a man in that position to take advantage of said position to screw around with school girls.
The myth arch of Wo Far, Joe, the Noshimuri men and Steve blew my bloody mind. It was tight, it was exciting, the confrontation between Steve and Joe, Steve and Adam Noshimuri, shivers, my friends, shivers.
The fact that Steve, with his words, threw the fact that he was tortured (the word was actually said, I can't believe it!) and that Jenna (my lovely, poor, misguided, Jenna!) was killed over whatever it is that Joe is concealing made the episode for me. Up until that point, it was a give or take for me, but the interaction in Adam Noshimuri's house (god, you can see the trauma is Steve's eyes) and the confrontation with Joe in the car - well, it made me very very happy. It hit my continuity and consequences narrative kinks very hard and I love every minute the myth arch was touched in this episode.
It's no secret that I'm a Danny girl. I watch the show mainly for Danny and for Scott, because his acting, Jesus, give him an award already, for real! *ahem* sorry. I'm a Danny girl and a Danny/Steve shipper. However, as a Danny girl, I love Steve, because he loves him (I love Steve in his own right, of course, he's lovely), but if Danny didn't love Steve, I don't think I would have been so invested in him.
When Steve kidnaps the jury man I went O_O because I was not expecting the hood and the threats - I was kind of hoping Danny would say something about that, but I think he has stopped caring which makes me sad, but also makes me look forward to seeing Danny's story unravel - because he and Steve aren't taking care of each other and it's affecting things the dynamic. Which I like, because it changes things up, like having Kono and Chin partner with Steve, which is interesting.
But the times Steve and Danny did interact, like at the construction sight, Scott's subtle acting wins out and O'Lough's emoting was gold. It was gorgeous to watch and I miss that a bit. I do have a lot of faith in that dynamic being revisited and restored at a later date, because really, it's their partnership that floats this boat (no pun intended).
There was even, good god, a Bechdel win (WARNING: TV Tropes link!). Technical, yes, but still a win, which I did not expect.
A very good episode all around. I loved it. A lot. This is a strong opener for the second half of the season.
