April is Sexaul Assault Awareness Month
Apr. 30th, 2007 11:59 pm
I'm a regular reader of comics and I'm a regular reader of Girl Wonder - The feminist activist group out there fighting for the way women are depicted in comic books (mainstream/manga/and others) and to raise awareness about women in the comic book industry.
The ribbon is a link to Girl Wonder's page about Sexual Assault Awareness Month, specifically about the way it is depicted in comic books.
Rachel Edidin's blog Insideout will be exploring the issue throughout the month.
This is "Insideout"'s LJ feed
However, it is known that sexual assault and rape are not fiction and that far too many people are victims to this crime, not to mention domestic violence, incest, sexual harassments and many other crimes that are a way for someone to exert control in the most harmful, painful and traumatizing way possible over another human being,
The websites dealing with rape and sexual assault found on Girl Wonder are American centric, so I've decided to put here some websites which are specific to Israel:
Macom - Self Help for victims of Sexual assault -
The Association of Rape Crisis Centers in Israel -
L.O. Combat Violence Against Women - ל.א.
Mavoi Satum - Opening Up the Dead End for the Aguna -
Israeli Women's Lobby -
There are numerous websites, with different statistics, but the main thing is to be aware and to raise awareness against this endemic social disease with doesn't discriminate according to race, ethnicity, religion or nationality and what is often skewed, gender.

Date: 2007-04-08 09:57 pm (UTC)You should pass it along, make sure people know about it and educate themselves, because it goes beyond "women's issues", it's a societal disease.

I think the Internet is useful at making all these issues global and breaking the parochial view that so many people have when it comes to social issues.
