The point when Iran starting being threat #1 was after the second Gulf War. Till then Iraq was threat #1. It seems legitimate to me that after Iraq was liberated by America and no longer threatened Israel that some other country would come in as enemy #1.
As for the "mark", it has never passed. The predictions for a nuclear-able Iran have never "come and gone". The fact that someone is paranoid does NOT mean that noone is out to get them.
