No it isn't always appropriate and where it isn't, believe me, I don't feel the ambivalence I talk about.

My issue is that where it is appropriate it can either be ignored, thus yanking away my suspense of disbelief, or exploited in the most insensitive way possible which leaves me with the desire to grab a red pen and write on the margins "NEEDS TO BE REWRITTEN LIKE WHOA!"
