I agree, it can't just sit there. The balance is delicate though, when it comes to these things. Not everything can be categorised as a pass or a fail - which is the impression I'm getting in the discussion. And a lot, not all by any means, can in the end be down to reader interpretation. Most, is obliviousness no doubt and calling out authors for what amounts lazy writing is a good thing, but I think making it a pass/fail thing is erroneous.
