To admit that we're just other animals would be to remove our special feeling in the world, and then it would open up people to question whether human life is more valuable than other forms of life, and then you get all the religious nuts unhappy because they don't get to claim humans are God's special children, and it's all downhill and "burn the evolutionists" from there.

That said, to make the Bloodhound Gang far more famous than they ever should be, "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals."
