Yeah, I think one of the things a lot of non-ACD Holmes works forget is Watson being cool. The best example for me of this phenomenon is that Disney movie The Great Mouse Detective, though I love that movie anyway because of childhood nostalgia--but seriously, if Watson can't hold the audience's interest, how could he hold Holmes's? I liked that about the new movie, that it set the story from Holmes's viewpoint and made Watson the object of desire; it was a neat little reversal of the audience usually being introduced to the story through Watson, where Holmes is the distant/incomprehensible one.
