I believe in the silver rule:

Do not do unto others as you would not want done to yourself.

It removes the squicky thought of assuming that your desires are the same as everyone else's desires. And, for me at least, it makes the emotional impact greater. Would I want someone to bulldoze my home or the homes of my family? No? Then I shouldn't do it. The silver rule is narrower, but it makes fewer assumptions that all people are like me.
