Sensless Violence

Pakistan's Opposition Leader Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated after she spoke at a political rally in Rawalpindi.
She was shot and subsequently a bomb exploded wounding many of those attending the rally.

What a tragedy.

BBC report and another BBC report.

Not to mention the 180 degree shift in Pakistani politics now, especially seeing as the Parliamentary elections are/were to be held on the 8th of January.

18:37 - Edited to Add: a quick time line of Benazir Bhutto's life.

Fabulous, the spectre of civil war in a country with notoriously lax command and control over their nuclear weapons. :(

With any luck the US will intervene and invade Pakistan... Ya know to bring them killing folks to justice.
You know Bush is thinking that.

I can't remember, are the Pakastani's still our friends, or do we not need the airfields in northern pakistan to drop bombs on the Afghans heads anymore?

Last I heard British military commanders in Souther Afghanistant considered themselves to be more or less at war with Pakistan, given the amount of backing and support (some of) the Pakastanis were giving to the Taliban.

God it's a nightmare. Who in their right mind invades Afghanistan.

Yikes... I fear for anyone living in Pakistan over the next few weeks. And what a terrible end to a fascinating life.

I'm watching the News on teevee and there are riots all over the place. It's going to take a while for Pakistan to get back the way it was and that wasn't normal before!

Reminds me of when Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated, GD the chaos that erupted.

The most obscure Muslim nation I could think of.

That's awful. And even if you're hellbent on killing a leader you hate, why do you have to murder civilians? I don't get people.

Terrible. Terrible. No other words/thoughts describe it.

Karachi is a shithole of a city, and yet one of the biggest. Some of the people I know from the city told me of the horrors of the city, that people would go around on motorcycles (like here) and kill doctors of different sects. Doctors.

What a tragedy. And what bravery of Bhotto. She knew her life was in danger, and yet continued to press for democracy to return.

They're our allies. Enemy of our enemy and all that.
